What is NEDS?
The Network of Swiss Development Documentation
Centres For over a decade there have been informal contacts among Swiss libraries and documentation centres working in the field of development cooperation. In 1995 these relationships were given a formal basis with the foundation of the association called NEDS (Network of Swiss Documentation and Information Centres). The objectives of NEDS are:
The 20 most important Swiss development cooperation libraries and documentation centres are members of NEDS. They are financed by universities, government agencies - such as the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) -, and private development and missionary organisations. The changes in information technology over the last few years are of great significance for NEDS members, as the new techniques are creating new possibilities for communication between partners. NEDS has been able to meet two basic common needs:
NEDS members meet at least twice a year to exchange information. Whereas the main issue of the spring meeting is an extended exchange of information regarding the successes and problems of the libraries and documentation centres represented within NEDS, the main focus of the autumn meeting is on the discussion of current topics. These meetings normally include a visit to the information centre of a NEDS member. These periodic meetings create welcome opportunities for establishing personal contacts. NEDS members have contacts with many other development
cooperation networks. The network affiliations of NEDS members include
IVEP (Informationsverbund Entwicklungspolitik),
RITIMO (Réseau d'Information
Tiers-Monde de centres de documentation pour le développement)
and EADI (European Association of Development
Research and Training Institutes, Working Group on Information and Documentation).
